What is an Artist's Book?

This question encouraging visitors to write their response on a large piece of paper is up on the wall of Patriot Hall, Stockbridge, Edinburgh during a charming exhibition of Artists' Books. Here are some of the answers:

Organized by the Artists' Book Group, a Scottish collective there are also workshops on how to make your own book are on offer over this weekend too. (See link below.)

__________Book laser cut by Lesley May Miller______________

Ranging from fold-ups to cut-ups, concertinas to creations more in common with origami than the book format as one usually knows it - I loved their at times fiddly inventiveness (being rather cack-handed with the Stanley knife myself, I'm jealous of their skill).

My favourite was a beautiful, subtle page of calligraphic writing on Chinese paper (above) by Susie Leiper - she's into all things Chinese, as you can see from her splendid outfit in the photo below -

- she speaks Chinese and has had an editorial career in books on Chinese art and archaeology, apart from being an award-winning calligrapher, studying under Donald Jackson.

As a poet, I was delighted to discover a book of haiku, a collaboration between Lesley May Miller and Iain Matheson - they decided to send eachother a haiku and then respond in turn. The dates are, intriguingly, numerically significant.

With text or no, the books in this exhibition were all beautiful, fascinating objects in their own right.
