A sound and poetry walk with some rather special umbrellas, developed by Sonja Heyer and Stephanie Green—free against a refundable deposit
Berlin Umbrella is a poetry/sound walk by the poet Stephanie Green and the sound artist Sonja Heyer. Take an umbrella on a self-directed walk—by opening the umbrella you can listen to an immersive soundscape of poetry, natural water and other percussive effects. The installation explores Berlin’s water, both visible and hidden, the sources of the river Spree, its ecology, folklore and history through many voices, including that of the river itself, from glacial times, through Nazi atrocities and Cold War tragedies to the Fall of the Wall and contemporary issues.
Umbrellas can be borrowed against a deposit from the Festival Desk from Friday afternoon onwards. To learn more about the project and the related exhibition Berlin Water, join Sonja Heyer, Stephanie Green and artist Valerie Coffin Price at their Meet the Artist event on Saturday morning.
Voices: Stephanie Green, James T. Harding, Jan Dietrich, Bert Preikschat and Beate Rademacher. Assistant sound technician: James T. Harding. With thanks for support from the British Council Berlin, Creative Scotland and the Goethe-Institut Glasgow

Participants: Stephanie Green and Sonja Heyer
